The picturesque town of Pietrafitta, in Calabria, was part of the Casali of Cosenza and is located a few kilometers from the provincial capital. There has always been a very close relationship between Cosenza and its Casali, almost as if they were considered one entity.
Once divided into five villages, later grouped into one, its life has been marked by earthquakes, plagues, and wars that have contributed to the destruction of many houses and places of worship in Pietrafitta. As a result of these events, the town has a single parish, that of Saint Nicola, the patron saint of the city. The church dedicated to the Saint of Bari dominates the town from above, with its facade and the nearby bell tower, preserving artistic and architectural details spanning five centuries.
The historical memory of Pietrafitta is also attested by the 17th-century crucifix inside the Church of Saint Antonio of Padova, home to the Friars Minor, attributed to friar Angelo of Pietrafitta. Near the Convent is the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes, where silence and mysticism reign supreme.
Another significant place of worship is the small church of Saint Martino in Canale, where, in 1202, Abbot Gioacchino died while overseeing renovation works. The church, in fact, depended on the Florense Abbey of San Giovanni in Fiore.
